Here's the deal...
Scooters with license plates (motorcycles are welcome too) are now required by the letter of the law to take a full, legal space and park parallel to the curb.
This event is to show how idiotic and counterproductive that law is and to make legislators and residents aware that it should be changed.
We would like parking regs for scooters to be based on physical vehicle dimensions and not on how fast a vehicle can travel.
Therefore, we will gather at Charles Street and Boylston between the two halves of the Common and take meter spots as they become available.
If your scooter is registered and plated...
Gather at the lower Common at 8:45 and stake out a spot. Line up and one-by-one take over spots vacated by their overnight occupants.
It's more effectively visually and in practice to find adjacent spots if at all possible.
Remain in your spot until 10AM. Bring five quarters for the meter.
This is a peaceful way to let drivers know about the law. No confrontations please, but explain that "Isn't it silly that such a cute and efficient vehicle MUST take a whole spot?"
Then suggest they talk to the Mayor and the Governor to take another look at the law.
It would also be a good idea to bring your license and registration and have all appropriate riding gear.
Our goal is to obey the law and allow people to see that making us take a whole space is idiocy.
If your scooter is currently a moped - registered/stickered as such... feel free to join us, a moped may park in a metered space, as long as it isn't chained to the parking meter. This is something I wasn't clear on until recently. So ANYONE with a scoot can take part and take over spaces. Cool!
Everyone...
Be polite and legal in all you do. This Scoot-up is a regular event. After Aug. 1, until you get your limited-use plate, you can still park on the sidewalk. After you get your plate you can come down to the Common and join us in taking even more spots.
